VSB releases revised budget proposal

The Vancouver school board has updated its budget proposal for next year after the government announced a boost in funding earlier this week. The new funding, plus another annex that will close, mean the district now has an extra $3.2 million, which brings the total shortfall down to $24 million, according to a staff report.

No parents have registered their children at Henderson Annex for next year, which brings to three the number of schools that have closed in Vancouver due to attrition. That closure will save the district $578,729, the report says.

Other changes in the new staff proposal:

  • the athletic coordinator position is no longer considered for elimination
  • the fine arts coordinator position is no longer considered for elimination
  • the idea of charging teachers to park in school lots is off the table
  • the cuts to secondary school staffing have been reduced by one-third to 23 teachers
  • the cuts to elementary school non-enrolling teachers have been reduced by half to five teachers
  • the cuts to special education support workers have been reduced by more than half to five teachers
  • the cuts to literacy teachers have been reduced by two-thirds to four teachers
  • the cuts to vice-principals have been reduced by one-third to four vice-principals
  • a substance abuse youth worker position will no longer be considered for elimination
  • the reductions in gifted staffing have been reduced by one-third to two teachers.
