The head of Canada’s largest homicide squad has been appointed the top cop in the Surrey RCMP.

Chief Supt. Dwayne McDonald got the nod after an extensive interview process by senior RCMP officers and City of Surrey representatives.

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner and RCMP Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens made the announcement at Surrey RCMP headquarters Tuesday.

“Chief Supt. McDonald will carry on the tradition of exemplary leaders we have been fortunate to have at Surrey detachment,” Hepner said. “As we move forward with our public safety strategy, Dwayne’s high level experience combined with his progressive and community-first approach to policing will make a real difference in the lives of Surrey residents.”

Callens said McDonald’s experience is right to deal with the challenges of Surrey as “a dynamic and growing city.”

McDonald has been a Mountie for 21 years, heading the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team for the past two years.

He spent his youth in Surrey and commented that he wrote his RCMP entrance exam in the same room where reporters and city officials gathered for Tuesday’s announcement.

Hepner also praised Chief Supt. Bill Fordy, who has been Surrey’s top cop for four years. He’s been promoted to the officer-in-charge of the Lower Mainland District.

More to come….
