Abbotsford Highway crash: Tow truck driver hit by truck, breaks legs

The owner of a Fraser Valley towing company is urging drivers to slow down and smarten up after a tow truck driver suffered two broken legs in a collision on the side of Highway 1 in Abbotsford.

Jason Davis, owner of Aggressive Towing, said one of his employees was loading a van onto a flatbed tow truck Saturday morning when he was hit by a box truck. The box truck had been hit by another car.

“(The tow truck driver) was getting into the cab of the truck when the box truck collided with the driver’s side,” said Davis, who is also a cast member on Discovery Canada’s Highway Thru Hell.

Highway 1 westbound near Whatcom Road was closed for several hours Saturday while police investigated the collision. There have been several accidents on the stretch of highway through Abbotsford and Chilliwack this summer.

Davis said the road has become more congested since lanes were added through Langley.

“It creates a bottleneck, and this is what happens,” he said.

He also blamed impatient drivers.

“People don’t give any space,” he said. “Drivers are supposed to slow down and move over, but no one’s moving over.”

Two years ago a tow truck driver was clipped by a passenger-side mirror and suffered a concussion. Saturday’s collision was another close call, said Davis.

“We’re lucky he’s still alive.”
