4.5m popcorn kernels, 30 truckloads of poop, and more PNE numbers

And just like that, another year of the Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition has come and is almost gone.

If you didn’t get a chance to visit the PNE this summer, take a look at some of the numbers behind 2016’s Fair, and start looking forward to next year’s event.

Superdogs!

$299,652.52

That’s the amount raised in this year’s 4H auction, an agriculture program for youth in which they raise a project animal from birth over the course of a year, before selling the animal for profit at the PNE. The program saw about 360 participants this year in various categories, including beef, sheep and swine. Even more impressive? A total of 700 animals on display ate about 260 bales of hay – which produced enough poop to fill 30 dumpster truck loads over the course of this year’s fair.

4.5 million

Canadian Kettle Corn, one of 71 food vendors this year, has popped about 4.5 million kernels of corn for hungry fairgoers. And those delicious sugared mini doughnuts used 25,000 pounds of dough to make them. Over the last two weeks, some 21,000 racks of ribs have been devoured at RibFest, 7,500 Crazy Dogs have been sold, 210,000 ounces of root beer consumed at Buckeyes Root Beer, and 7,550 samosas were sold at Curry-In-A-Hurry. And fairgoers aren’t the only hungry folks – even the SuperDogs canine stars have eaten 860 pounds of dog food!

8,160

For many, visiting the PNE isn’t complete without a stop at the Wooden Roller Coaster. During the Fair’s two-week run, it’s estimated the coaster has already made 8,160 trips around the track. The ride, which first opened in 1958, lasts about 90 seconds. That’s more than enough time to lose a pair of sunglasses or a hat, if you haven’t secured your items properly before the ride takes off. On average, 150 pounds of hats are turned in annually. So far this year, 5,030 items are waiting for their owners at the lost and found.

121,000

If you win the $1.4-million PNE Prize Home, you’ll also be able to brag about having had the most number of guests over for a visit. More than 121,000 people have already toured the PNE Prize Home this year. As for the staff who sell those raffle tickets? It’s a wonder they haven’t all lost their voices yet from yelling, “win a house, win a car” an average of 2,000 times per day. They really want you to win the house and the car!

3,270

Sure, an unsuccessful go at one of the many midway games might have cost you about $5, but it costs the Fair a lot more. A total of 3,270 bottles have been broken so far this year at the Bottle Break Game, and 250,200 stuffed animals are given away annually to fairgoers who successfully outwit one of the Fair’s many midway games operators.
