Sunday shooting in Surrey leaves one man dead

Another man has died in a fatal shooting in Surrey on Sunday — the second such incident in just over a week.

Surrey Mounties, responding to a call about an injured man, found the victim suffering from gunshot wounds in the 13900-block Antrim Road just after 8 p.m. on Sunday. He was later pronounced dead.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) identified him as 27-year-old Sean Christopher Kelly.

Sean Christopher Kelly, 27, has been identified as the victim of Surrey's latest homicide.

Sean Christopher Kelly, 27, has been identified as the victim of Surrey’s latest homicide.

He has a lengthy criminal record, including firearm charges, drug possession for the purpose of trafficking and breaches of a court undertaking. The charges stemmed from incidents in Surrey and Delta.

On Monday morning, the quiet residential neighbourhood was marked by police tape and evidence markers as homicide investigators scoured the area in what is being described as a targeted shooting.

There have been at least 48 shootings in Surrey this year, and some residents say this latest gunfire has left them jumpy.

“It’s hitting too close to home,” said one man, who only wanted to be identified by his first name, Al. “Something like this happening close to where you live, it gives you a sense of unease.”

Last Saturday, two men were shot in the driveway of a home in the 14300-block 90A Avenue. One man was injured, while another, Jatinder (Michael) Sandhu, died from his injuries.

Homicide investigators say neither men had criminal records. They don’t believe the murder victim, Sandhu, was involved in an ongoing gang conflict over the street-level drug trade.

On Thursday, shots were fired in the area of 135A Street and 108th Avenue. Officers found two men with gunshot wounds. They were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information on Sunday’s shooting is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
