A man has been arrested and could be charged after allegedly driving an ice cream truck into a ditch while drunk in Surrey on Thursday.
“It is extremely, extremely rare,” said Staff Sgt. Murray Hedderson of the choice of vehicle involved in the crash.
According to Surrey RCMP, there were multiple calls around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday that reported an ice cream truck “driving in an unusual manner” while headed north on 141st Street near 100th Avenue.
Callers said the truck was driving “erratically” and had hit several garbage cans along the roadside before swerving into a ditch.
According to reports, the driver attempted to flee the scene but was kept on site by several witnesses and bystanders until authorities arrived. Police did not have any immediate information on what pedestrian traffic was like at the time of the accident.
Police, firefighters and paramedics all attended the crash, but there were no injuries. The driver was treated by B.C. Ambulance at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
According to Hedderson, the driver was a 45-year-old Surrey man and alcohol is believed to be a factor.
“Charges are possible but they’re still working on the investigation,” he said.
Police are now asking any witnesses who either saw the truck driving prior to crashing or who helped at the scene of the crash to contact police and speak with investigators. Surrey RCMP can be reached at 604-599-0502.
