The City of North Vancouver has chosen Quay Property Management Corp. as its partner to develop The Shipyards-Lot 5, bringing the city a step closer to delivering a year-round “people place” on its central waterfront that includes an outdoor public skating rink and a water play area.

The outdoor public skating rink will be the largest in the Lower Mainland, the city said in a release.

The planned project, in Shipbuilders’ Square at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, between the Pinnacle Hotel and Pier 7 restaurant, also includes a covering for weather protection over the entire open space, heritage elements such as the use of the “machine shop” building, an enhanced public stage, underground parking, and a commercial component including a restaurant, retail and proposed hotel.

“As promised, The Shipyards will be a people place, a gathering space, vibrant with activity and amenities for young and old, residents and visitors alike,” said Mayor Darrell Mussatto in a statement. “We will deliver a dynamic waterfront like no other, completing the revitalization of the City of North Vancouver’s central waterfront.”

Remediation work will begin at the site this spring, and project completion is expected by the fall of 2018.

A public information session is planned for April 25 at the Pipe Shop from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
