The Campbell River School District has closed two schools, effective June 30. Oyster River and Discovery Passage elementary schools will both close at the end of this school year.
Students from both schools will be transferred to other elementary schools in the district.
The decisions to close the two schools were based on low enrolment, a projected continued decline in enrolment, the school buildings’ poor condition and costs to maintain and the proximity of nearby schools with space for the students, the district said in a news release.
The district will form a transition committee with parents and school staff to look after closing the school and keeping a history. Also, the district will be considering how to handle student transportation, student support services, library resources and other aspects of the closure, the release says.
The buildings will be considered surplus and may be leased or sold.
