Where do B.C.’s immigrants come from? Finally I can report…

Credit where credit is due.

For the better part of a year I have been trying to report on the countries of origin for B.C.-bound immigrants. The federal immigration department stopped publishing that information on their website in 2013. I documented that bizarre fight with the federal bureaucracy here and here.

Never mind filing Access to Information requests or paying thousands of dollars for some bureaucrat in Ottawa to send me information I already had, but couldn’t publish. It turns out all I had to do was wait for a change in government and then ask nicely. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada spokeswoman Faith St-John was good enough to provide me with the information recently.

So today, I publish. Hooray!

The statistics show a sharp drop in the number of permanent residents from China, which contributed by far the most immigrants to B.C. in 2005. Fast forward 10 years, though, and China is tied for top spot with both India and the Philippines.

The graphic below slices the data in several ways, revealing the fastest-growing and shrinking source countries. (For the purposes of this analysis, I only included countries from which at least 2,000 immigrants came to B.C. between 2005 and 2014. ) The final graphic lets you select a country and see how many immigrants have come to B.C. from there over the last 10 years.

Enjoy!
