Students unleash flood of Hotline Bling videos to lure Drake to UBC

Maybe you thought the Drake/Hotline Bling meme thing was over when NDP leader Thomas Mulcair busted out his dance moves inside a coloured lightbox for This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

Surely, the meme was meant to die after Donald Trump performed a parody of the Drake video on Saturday Night Live?

Still, it persists.

On Friday, the Twitter account @UBCHOTLINEBLING will unleash a barrage of 465 Hotline Bling video tributes featuring more than 2,000 University of B.C. students in an effort to convince the Canadian rapper to perform on campus.

Clik here to view. The videos, which will be Tweeted at Drake at rate of one per minute for 12 straight hours (9 a.m. to 9 p.m.), were recorded over two days this week at UBC’s Alma Mater Society Nest.
“We kind of wanted to make a meme that would end all memes. This seemed like the most ridiculous and craziest thing we could do,” said event coordinator Sam Massooleh.
Although the long-term goal is to bring Drake to UBC, Massooleh says the immediate goal was to boost school spirit. Mission accomplished, he says.
“On a campus with 50,000 kids it’s so hard to find something that everyone can rally around. The reception around this has been so magnificent, especially during midterm season when everyone is trying to get through everything. It’s been really great to see how many people have gotten excited about this and the buzz around campus,” Massooleh said.

Massooleh had a budget of $1,000, which was enough to rent the equipment and purchase 12 turtleneck sweaters, just like the one Drake wore in the video.
