Last year, during Anime Revolution I passed on the opportunity to interview Megumi Ogata, the original voice actress for Shinji of Evangelion, because she did not allow video or audio recording, only writing. I often wonder if I had missed a rare opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes of the legendary series Evangelion. This same thought lingered on until the early of this year when Vancouver Halloween Parade and Expo announced that Tiffany Grant, voice actress for Asuka Langley of Evangelion would be attending.
Unlike meeting with Japanese voice actors the process to meet Tiffany was quite simple, I just walked up to her. I met with Tiffany at her booth for a 30 minute interview and we chatted on a variety of subjects. Undoubtedly we spoke about voicing Asuka, but we also talked about the difficult scenes like Asuka’s final battle scene in the movie End of Evangelion. (check out this video of the interview)

Asuka Langley Shikinami from Evangelion 2.22
Asuka Langely is quite a complex character to play, her scenes are often energetic, and chaotic, tragedies such as suicide and disembodiment surrounded the character and those scenes were demanding not monotone. Yuko Miyamura the original voice actress for Asuka has said in an interview with SMASH that the series “was very hard”. Therefore it’s a pleasant surprise that Tiffany Grant appeared so relaxed, “the role came to me naturally” was her response. But she also shared that she feels very attached to the character, dressed head to toe in Asuka paraphernalia she explained “she’s like my younger sister, I hate watching horrible things happen to her.”

As a huge fan of Evangelion, meeting Tiffany was very special and intriguing. It helped me appreciate the franchise, her work on the series, and english dubs in anime even more.
