Someone with a little money to burn shelled out $1.1 million for this painting at Wednesday’s Heffel auction at the Vancouver Convention Centre. It’s called Pleine Saison and it was painted with a palette knife by the late Montreal artist Jean Paul Riopelle in 1954.
The buyer, who made the purchase via telephone, must fork over the cash plus an 18-per-cent “buyer’s premium” as well as taxes within seven days of the sale.
