Looking for something to do in Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Wednesday, May 17.
DROP-IN ROCK CHOIR
If you love to sing, even if you’re not particularly good at singing — which is most people — this right here is the perfect night out for you. Vancouver’s Impromptu Rock Choir meets Wednesday evenings at St. James Community Square for an informal, no-pressure sing session. No pressure! Have you seen other choirs? Do you know how they get so tight? Do you know how Whoopi Goldberg got the choir in Sister Act 2 to sound so good? Pressure. (Also: Lauryn Hill.) Who likes pressure? No one, and especially not this choir. They’re mostly into having fun and making everyone feel welcome.
This week, they’ll be tackling Shiny Happy People by R.E.M and You Can’t Always Get What You Want by The Rolling Stones. Two very singable songs. Admittedly, you might find it difficult to get every note in that Stones hit, but if you try, you might find you get what you need. There are no auditions, you don’t need any musical experience, you don’t have to memorize anything, and you never have to sing a solo. Good luck finding another choir this easygoing.
Where: St. James Community Square, 3214 W. 10th, Vancouver
When: 7:30-9pm
Cost: $10 ($5 for students)
BRAIN INJURY FILM FESTIVAL
Looking for an engaging, enlightening film about brain trauma for your next date night? Of course you are, and Fraser Health’s got you covered with the 4th Brain Injury Film Festival. Each Wednesday night for the next three weeks, you can attend the free screening of a film highlighting issues in brain injury, followed by a moderated discussion led by experts. Experts!
This week’s film, My Beautiful Broken Brain, is about the life and recovery of 34-year-old hemorrhagic stroke victim Lotje Sodderland. The Kickstarter-funded film won the DOC U award at the 2014 International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. And if your date doesn’t want to watch documentaries about brain trauma with you, you should probably just break it off before they do.
Where: Douglas College Lecture Theatre N2201, 700 Royal Ave., New West
When: May 17, 7-9pm
Cost: FREE
STEPHEN LYNCH: THE MY OLD HEART TOUR
Musical comedian Stephen Lynch stops by The Rio as part of his My Old Heart Tour, so if you prefer your jokes sung rather than told, this is the activity for you. Lynch has performed on Comedy Central and on Broadway, where he played the lead in The Wedding Singer. He cites Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell as inspirations, but people say he’s definitely funnier than both.
Where: Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway, Vancouver
When: Doors at 7pm, show at 8pm
Cost: $30
