B.C. universities are graduating far more teachers than the system can absorb. Last year, former education minister George Abbott said there were 2,700 to 2,800 teachers looking for work but only 800 openings in the K-12 system.
Nevertheless, the provincial government is now offering 20 $5,000 scholarships for secondary students who enrol in education faculties at B.C. universities.
