Queen Elizabeth II won’t travel to Canada to mark its 150th anniversary next year, the Queen’s assistant private secretary, Samantha Cohen, told reporters in London on Thursday. Cohen said that it’s difficult for the Queen to travel such a long distance at the age of 90.
“That’s not to say that Canada’s 150th anniversary won’t be marked in some way by her here,” Cohen said.
“But she’s 90. It’s a long trip. It’s difficult.
Canadian Heritage officials had in the past mused about a possible royal presence on Parliament Hill when Canadians celebrate the country’s 150th anniversary on July 1, 2017. Monarchists speculated the importance of the event might prompt the Queen, who is Canada’s head of state, to undertake the journey, despite her travel limitations.
It remains possible other members of the Royal Family might visit Canada. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently visited British Columbia and the Yukon in September and October.
