The experience lasted only a couple of minutes, but photographer Mark Bates of North Vancouver will remember it for a lifetime.
Bates was out photographing nature recently on a rainy afternoon with his 500-millimetre telephoto lens when he spotted a bobcat by the water’s edge in the Burnaby Lake area, attracted to a bumper run of chum salmon.
“It was exciting, the very first time I have seen and photographed one,” he said.
The bobcat took a couple of bites from one spawned-out salmon, and gave the appearance of being a young animal, jumping into the water to play with a branch that was splashing in the current. “It was like a kitten,” he said. “It jumped in and physically attacked it.”
