The Pacific News Group, which includes the Vancouver Sun and Province newsrooms, is relocating to a new home in East Vancouver next year.
On Thursday, PNG president Gordon Fisher shared the news with staff that the papers will leave their downtown home of two decades for a spot at the Broadway Tech Centre campus, located at 2985 Virtual Way, near Renfrew and Broadway. Fisher cited the expiration of the company’s current lease at 200 Granville Street and a need for a more collaborative workspace as motivations for the move.
“Although there was always the possibility we would elect to remain where we are, the thought of a transformational move to signify our desire for a new beginning was a mouth-watering dream,” he said in a company-wide memo.
The move will place the combined Sun and Province newsroom, as well as other PNG departments, on a more than 29,000-square-feet fourth floor of a LEED-certified building on the BTC campus’s northeast corner. The office will be “completely customized” for PNG’s needs, with an “airy, open concept design,” according to Fisher’s memo.
The new location also accommodates staff residing outside of Vancouver who will no longer need to travel downtown, and is accessible to both SkyTrain and Broadway bus lines. A fitness facility, YMCA daycare, Starbucks, and sports courts also populate the eight-building campus.
“And, as always, the bottom line was important. Despite the intense pressures on real estate in Vancouver, our new lease is one that will significantly reduce our operating costs,” said Fisher.
The move, which Fisher says will take place no later than June 1, 2017, will come exactly a year after the Vancouver Sun and Province newsrooms were combined.
