The driver of a taxi was killed Thursday night in a single-vehicle crash on Barnet Highway.
The taxi was travelling westbound around 11:30 p.m. when it left the road in the 9900-block of Barnet Highway, just inside the Burnaby-Port Moody boundary, said Burnaby Staff Sgt. Major John Buis.
Buis said it’s believed the taxi struck a tree or pole but his office is working to confirm this. The taxi sustained extensive damage and the engine was sheared from the vehicle.
The male driver, an employee of the taxi company, was its lone occupant.
Police are investigating whether speed or weather played a role in the crash. The RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is investigating.
The Burnaby detachment is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact its non-emergency line at 604-294-7922.
