Police are investigating a suspected drug lab following a blaze Friday inside a Burnaby home.
At 9 p.m., fire crews received calls from a resident of the upstairs level of a home at 5329 Manor St., said Dave Samson, deputy fire chief for the Burnaby Fire Department.
Samson, who was among firefighters who responded, said the caller reported a blaze in the home’s basement and crews arrived to find the home’s occupants safe outside.
Crews encountered heavy smoke in the building but managed to confine and extinguish the flames.
As the smoke began to clear, “they discovered large quantities of products and equipment consistent with clandestine drug labs,” Samson said.
Firefighters were ordered to withdraw from the building for their safety. Gas and hydro were shut off and two neighbouring homes were evacuated.
A police drug-lab team was called to investigate. It remained at the property Saturday to collect equipment and evidence.
No one was injured during the blaze.
