Nine houses were damaged from flooding early Thursday morning in North Vancouver after a water main burst.

The water main burst shortly after 2 a.m., at the intersection of Golf and Fairview Drive, in the Deep Cove area, according to assistant fire chief Jim Bonneville.

Bonneville said damage to the homes is varied, and fire and city crews were working Thursday morning to help residents pump out the water from their basements.

A large amount of water swamped one resident’s yard, he said, making it look like a swimming pool, while elsewhere water undermined roads, causing cracks and other damage. Flooding pushed up gravel from the road and plugged storm drains too, he added.

The District of North Vancouver is investigating to determine a cause of the broken main. Bonneville said the city responded “quickly” to shut off the water and fix the problem.

According to the district, the water main is more than four decades old and due to be replaced. Crews are working to fix the road that has been closed. The district anticipates that it will reopen around noon Thursday.
