Things to do in Vancouver this weekend: Sept. 17 and Sept. 18

Today’s culture fix includes a concert by reigning rapper Drake; a fundraiser for Ryerson Church, a venue considered by many local choirs as a favourite place to perform and record; a and an opportunity to get a head start on (please, not already) Xmas shopping at Portobello Market.

Drake

The zeitgeist-ruling rapper and mogul, who banked $39.5 million last year alone, performs a set heavy on highlights from his latest sensation Views, which dominated Spotify’s most streamed songs of the summer list, taking three of the top five positions (while his might-be-squeeze singer Rhianna took the other two). Looking to meet Drake? Maybe he’ll show up at the concert afterparty, hosted by DVSN, the Toronto act signed to his label that opens the show (Sept. 18 at Alexander in Gastown).

Sept. 17 and Sept. 18, 7 p.m. | Rogers Arena

Tickets: $49.50-$179.50, livenation.com

ReSounding Ryerson

Some of Vancouver’s most vibrant and passionate choirs—Chor Leoni Men’s Choir , Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir, Vancouver Cantata Singers, and Vancouver Bach Children’s Choir—perform all-time favourite songs at a fundraiser for the venue, a beautiful stone church with outstanding acoustics.

Portobello West Market

The quarterly market of 60 local designers celebrates its 10th anniversary. To mark the occasion, founder Carlie Smith reveals her favourite finds at the art and fashion market: clothing by Elroy Apparel and Nicole Bridger; glass pendants from Braden Hammond and Irit Sorokin’s “amazing jewelry”. Once again, the market features live music and a kids’ play zone.

Sept. 17 and Sept. 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Creekside Community Centre
