Metro Vancouver commuters facing delays on SkyTrain because of track problem

SkyTrain service has been restored after an earlier track problem on the Expo Line, however TransLink says it may take some time before it returns to normal and crowding to ease.

Early Tuesday morning, TransLink announced no service on the Expo Line between Metrotown and Commercial-Broadway stations.  The Expo Line was running from King George to Metrotown, and from Broadway to Waterfront only.

Passengers headed downtown from Surrey are being asked to switch at Columbia Station to the Millennium Line bound for VCC-Clark, where they can transfer to trains bound for Waterfront.

There is service on the Millennium Line from VCC-Clark to Columbia only. TransLink says a shuttle bus has been set up between Edmonds and Commercial-Broadway stations.

TransLink spokeswoman Anne Drennan says the problem started overnight with the rail grinder, which is a heavy piece of equipment used during off hours to smooth any uneven surfaces on the rails.

She says the grinder derailed between Joyce and Patterson stations and caused some damage to the track. Crews have now re-railed the heavy machine and it has been moved off the tracks so they can repair the damage.

She estimated that the problem would be resolved by 8:15 a.m., but said it would take an estimated half an hour before service returned to normal.
