A special prosecutor has been appointed to handle legal issues involving an alleged offence by MLA Pat Pimm.
The Criminal Justice Branch announced Wednesday it has appointed Vancouver lawyer Michael Klein to address matters related to Pimm, who stepped down Monday from the B.C. Liberal caucus after unspecified allegations were brought against him.
“In light of Mr. Pimm’s status as a MLA, the appointment of a Special Prosecutor is intended to avoid any potential for real or perceived improper influence in the administration of criminal justice,” said a statement issued by the Criminal Justice Branch.
Pimm, a two-term MLA for Peace River North, was arrested for an alleged offence, but has since been released.
According to the branch, it is up to police to determine whether to submit a report to Crown counsel recommending charges. The branch has not received such a report. No charge has been laid against Pimm.
Klein’s mandate includes addressing issues that may arise in respect to Pimm’s release documents, including any related court appearances or applications, said the branch. The special prosecutor will also advise RCMP investigating the allegations against Pimm.
Pimm remains in the legislature as an independent MLA.
