5 things about Vancouver's 2016 Pride Parade

There was plenty of colour, and more than a few life lessons to experience at Sunday’s Pride Parade in Vancouver.

1. Pride in Sobriety: Brook Schmidt, of Kamloops BC is living in Surrey, where she is in recovery. Schmidt was part of the Clean, Sober and Proud float. “I’m here wearing bright colours to show people we’re sober and we’re proud.”

2. Kids get it: Raphael Sandoval-Ewan, 12 joined his father Jerry Ewan on the Vancouver School Board Float. Sandoval Ewan said he was here to support all the people across the globe who are in the LGBTQ community, and to “let them know they are not alone in the world.”

3. Deep Roots: Harlan Pruden a First Nations Cree activist and curator of this year’s Out on Screen joined the parade in brilliantly-coloured regalia. “I’m here to increase the visibility of the Two-Spirit community. We pre-date Columbus, we were here before colonization, and we’re still here.”

4. We’ve come a long way, baby: Oliv Howe remembers fighting for the right to gather and celebrate decades ago in Vancouver, before the parade became the massive, beloved community celebration it is today. “Some people marched with bags over their heads to hide their faces, and bystanders pelted us with eggs,” he said.
