A group of Vancouver Island students will be cutting their trip to Europe short and returning to Canada after Thursday’s deadly attack in Nice.
Dale Burgos, a spokesman for the Nanaimo-Ladysmith school district, said Saturday that based on “expert advice and an abundance of caution” they took the difficult decision to order the 85 students and chaperons home. The students had been scheduled to stay in Spain for the rest of the summer after their visit to France.
Burgos said some of the students were close enough to see the truck, from about 30 metres away, as the driver drove into a Bastille Day crowd on the city’s famed waterfront promenade, killing 84 people and injuring 303.

Alice Clisson dropped off a white rose and wrote a message of support on the board outside the French Consulate in Vancouver on July 16 2016.
School superintendent John Blain said in a statement that the students witnessed a horrific event and will need continuing support from the district.
“We are prepared to offer our counsellors to all students and staff for as long as they need,” he said.

France remains on high alert and Spain has been in a heightened state of alert for the past year, said, J. Kevin Cameron, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response.
“The likelihood of further risk to our students, staff and volunteers is simply too high,” he said. “Both organized terrorists and troubled individuals primed for violence would feel more justified to attempt further violent acts during this critical period.”
The district is working to make the travel arrangements and provide financial support to bring the students and staff home. No date has been set for their return. Burgos said the district will be in contact with students’ parents shortly to discuss travel details.
Meantime, the French Consulate in Vancouver has put out a white board for Vancouverites to write messages of support. It will be taken down on Tuesday and send to Nice city hall as a testimonial of Vancouver’s support.
