The body found Sunday in a shallow North Vancouver creek has been identified as that of a 34-year-old man who had been reported missing.

North Vancouver RCMP issued an alert May 26 asking for the public’s help in locating Jastinder Athwal, who was last seen in Lynn Valley on May 19.

On Sunday morning, Mounties were called to a popular dog park where a passerby spotted a body in Lynn Creek underneath a train bridge.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed Monday the body was Athwal’s. His family has been notified.

Police are treating the death as “suspicious,” as the cause of death remains unknown, and homicide has not been ruled out, Staff Sgt. Jen Pound said in a statement.

An autopsy will be performed in the coming days and is expected to determine the cause of death and indicate whether foul play was a factor, police said.

Anyone with information about Athwal after his disappearance May 19 is asked to call IHIT at 1-877-551-4448.
