A loud explosion and fire, with flames reported to be 25 metres high, was reported in a new townhouse development in Saanich on Sunday evening.
The fire was at 4009 Cedar Hill Road, just north of the University Heights shopping centre.
Four townhouses were reported to be involved, with fire spreading to nearby trees. Along with the Saanich fire department, firefighters from Oak Bay and Victoria were called to the scene.
The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. and was reported to be under control about half an hour later.
Traffic was diverted on Cedar Hill as well as Shelbourne Street.
Large clouds of black smoke could be seen, and the explosions could be heard, throughout the Greater Victoria area.
