The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate a death on Salt Spring Island after a man who was found unresponsive by police later died.

Salt Spring RCMP said Friday evening that police were called to a fight on Richard Flack Road at 4:20 a.m. Officers found a 36-year-old male, unresponsive with CPR being performed by two men, one of whom had not-life-threatening injuries.

Salt Spring RCMP continued CPR, until paramedics arrived. The unresponsive man was taken to the island’s hospital by ambulance, but died shortly after arrival.

The Independent Investigations Office investigates after such cases to see if any actions or inaction by police are connected to the man’s death, police said.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is also conducting an investigation into the suspicious death. No charges have been laid in connection with this investigation.

No further information was released.

The investigation follows an incident Thursday, in which the Independent Investigations Office was also called in, when a mother and her adult son were shot by police in the small northern B.C. community of Granisle, apparently after a dispute among neighbours.
