Eighteen members of Tarvinder Grewal’s family came out to participate in the 2016 Vancouver Sun Run on Sunday. The young woman with the big smile was the only one missing.
Tarvinder was 25 years old when she died of meningitis in January, according to her younger sister Harman.
“This is something we’re doing in her memory,” Harman said, with tears in her eyes.
She and the rest of the family wore “Team Tarvinder” T-shirts to honour their sister. Nine-year-old Harneet was the youngest member of the team, and she proudly showed off her racing bib.

Most of the family was doing the Sun Run for the very first time, and Harman said the younger kids in the family inspired everyone else to start running.
“They were running in school and they motivated us to get up and exercising,” she said.
A total of 43,372 people were registered for Sunday’s race, which took place under sunny blue skies. Two Ontarians claimed victory in the elite races: Lanni Marchant took the women’s title with a time of 32:16, while Eric Gillis won the men’s with a blistering 28:53.
Early in the morning, the crowds at the starting area of the race were so thick that runners were lined up at every entrance, waiting for the race to start so space would open up for them at the starting line on Georgia Street.
By the time the runners reached the finish line, they were shiny with sweat, but most were smiling as they high-fived their friends and compared times with their husbands and wives.
More than 40,000 people of all stripes — kids, grandparents, first-timers, elite athletes — participated in the 2016 Sun Run.

Sherian Kelly said she felt “pretty good” about her time of an hour and five minutes. She’d been suffering from bursitis and arthritis for months before the race, but she wasn’t going to let that hold her back. She’d just turned 70, which meant she was in a new division.
“Now I’m the youngest in my age group, so I was going to do this no matter what,” Kelly said.
This was her 19th consecutive Sun Run. She started running at age 52, and entered her first 10K run after her daughter came home from the University of Victoria for a visit and insisted they run together.
“I’d lived here since I was born, and I’d never heard of the Sun Run,” Kelly laughed. “But it’s a great race.”

The ranks of racers were filled with the usual corporate teams, school groups, people in wacky costumes and families out to enjoy fresh air and exercise together.
Mark Green wore his inspiration on his left leg: a tattoo of Terry Fox in action covered his entire calf, from his ankle to just below his knee.
It’s all about Canadian pride, Green explained.
“It’s either that or a hockey puck,” he said. “Terry Fox is an inspiration to anyone who’s had cancer or lost someone to cancer. I’ve had some hard times, so he means a lot to me.”
Results for everyone who entered Sunday’s Sun Run are available on The Vancouver Sun website.
