My room with a view
A lot of people design their garden from inside their home looking out of a window.
And I think it is a great idea because that is very often the best way to view the garden . . . from inside the house.
Many of the world’s great gardens have been designed this way – from the inside looking out, from what you can see from a living room or bedroom or balcony.

View of garden from my window
Looking out of my front window at the moment is a real pleasure. I see two rhododendrons in full bloom – a white Dora Amateus and blue R. augustinii – plus the purple candle-like flowers of a saucer magnolia, the new red and green foliage of Pieris japonica and the new leaves on a purple smoke bush (Cotinus coggygria).

View of garden from my window
Beyond the cedar hedge, there is a katsura tree with its lovely coppery new foliage all lit up by afternoon sunlight. Next to it is the fresh apple green foliage of a Japanese snowbell tree (Styrax japonica).
Out of view are the chartreuse flowers of Euphorbia characias wulfenii but these also mix into the overall picture along with a white mound of Erica carnea Springwood White and some yellow Corydalis lutea.

Rhododendron augustinii in front garden
There are a couple more rhododendrons to come into bloom plus drifts of red evergreen azaleas, but I am happy when all this colour subsides and leaves me with just serene shades and textures of green for summer.
I know that many other gardeners throughout the Lower Mainland enjoy spectacular garden views from the windows of their home. If you feel like sending me some images, perhaps I will have enough for a story on Rooms with a View. Send them to me at swhysall@postmedia.com if you like.
