Shaw service disrupted in Surrey due to damaged fibre connection

In the true definition of first world problems, many Shaw customers in Surrey have been without Internet, cable television and home phone service since the early morning hours of Saturday.

Those left without access to Wikipedia, cat videos and viral memes also include students at each of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s campuses.

The service disruption is caused by damage to a fibre connection, according to updates from Shaw.

“Some customers in the Surrey area of Lower Mainland may be experiencing interruptions to their Cable TV, Internet and Home Phone services,” read an update posted around 8:30 a.m.

“We are working to resolve this as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

An hour later, technicians confirmed the shortage was due to “fibre damage,” although no information was released as to whether that was caused by wayward roadwork or vandalism.

Around 1:30 p.m., new equipment was put into place, although no ETA was provided for when service would be restored.

One customer reported having been without Shaw service since 4:30 a.m. Saturday.
