A U.S. citizen convicted of importing cocaine into Canada on Christmas Day, 2014, will be spending several Christmases in a Canadian jail.
RCMP said that Johnny Uy, who was arrested near Oak Bay for importing two kilograms of cocaine, had travelled into Canada through the Peace Arch border crossing and then drove to the Tsawwassen ferry terminal where he boarded a ferry for Swartz Bay.
Uy arrived in Victoria on Dec. 24, and on Christmas morning went to Oak Bay where he met a vessel recently arrived from the U.S.
Uy, who was arrested as he attempted to leave the area, was sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty last month of importation of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.
His arrest followed a joint investigation involving RCMP, Oak Bay police and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
