Violence in Surrey and Vancouver over the weekend

Shootings, stabbings and murders kept police in both Vancouver and Surrey busy over the weekend.

The most recent event was a fatal stabbing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Sunday afternoon about 4:30 pm.

Vancouver Police Sgt. Randy Fincham said police saw a fight at Main and Hastings Street, during which a man suffered a life-threatening stab wound.

“He was rushed to hospital by paramedics, where he died a short time later,” Fincham said. “No arrests have been made.”

Earlier Sunday in Surrey, there was a shooting and a domestic murder.

Surrey RCMP S. Sgt. Joe Johal said officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 11000-block of 132 Street about 6:50 a.m.

They found shell casings at the scene.

“The initial investigation has revealed that shots were fired at a residence in the area but no one was injured in the residence,” Johal said. “Officers conducted neighbourhood canvassing and spoke with several witnesses to
obtain further information.”

He said the investigation is “still in its early stages, but initial indications are that this is a targeted residence and occupants of the residence are known to police.”

Just an hour before the shooting, police were called to a residence in the 10100-block of 128 Street after reports of a disturbance.

“Upon arrival, officers located a female in her 60s suffering from life threatening injuries who was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Johal said.

“Initial investigation has revealed that an altercation occurred between a male and females in the residence resulting in one female deceased. The investigation is still in its early stages, but the suspect has been arrested from the scene.”

He said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team had been called in.

There were two other violent incidents in Vancouver Saturday.

Fincham said a man was stabbed about 1 p.m. in the 2300-block of Eton Street after an argument with two men who were not known to him. Reports said he was collecting bottles in a laneway when he was targeting by thugs.

“He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries,” Fincham said.

“The motive for the stabbing is unknown at this time. No arrests have been made in the case and the investigation is ongoing.”

And about 1 a.m. Saturday, there was a shooting on the grounds of Sexsmith Elementary, 7410 Columbia Street.

“When police arrived, they determined that a group of men outside the school had been confronted by two other men who were unknown to them. One of those men produced a gun and shot at the group. All of the men involved ran away,” Fincham said. “A short time later, a 21 year-old man showed up at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.”

No arrests have been made.
