Two teens from the Lower Mainland are facing charges after a shooting and lengthy car chase on Vancouver Island.
Armaan Singh Chandi, 18, and Inderpaul Singh Aujla, 19, are facing attempted murder and five other charges after being arrested in Duncan Tuesday afternoon.
Chandi, of Surrey, and Aujla, of Mission, have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance in Nanaimo Friday.
Nanaimo RCMP said the two were arrested in Duncan after a pursuit “that began in Nanaimo and involved multiple police vehicles from several police jurisdictions.”
“During the pursuit, two police officers from Nanaimo were injured and four police vehicles damaged,” Const. Gary O’Brien said.
It all started just before 4 p.m. Tuesday when police received several reports of shot fired into an occupied vehicle.
“This vehicle was parked in a residential area of Nanaimo and was adjacent to a children’s daycare that was occupied with children,” O’Brien said.
“A witness to the shooting managed to provide a description of the suspect vehicle. Approximately 20 minutes after the shooting, the suspect vehicle was spotted by several Nanaimo RCMP officers in south Nanaimo.”
He said the officers followed the vehicle to Ladysmith “at which point Ladysmith RCMP became involved.
“Ladysmith RCMP officers activated their emergency equipment but the vehicle did not stop and continued through Ladysmith, at a high rate of speed.”
He said the chase continued south to Duncan where at about 4:50 p.m. the arrest took place on the Island Highway and.
The injured officers were treated at at hospital with “non-life threatening injuries.”
O’Brien said that “although multiple rounds were fired at the vehicle from close range, the lone male occupant was not injured.”
