Vancouver actor Ryan Reynolds has struck gold with Deadpool.
The R-rated comic book movie smashed box office records by grossing $150 million domestically over the four-day U.S. President’s Day weekend and a further $132.7 million internationally.
The movie website, boxofficemojo.com, says Deadpool, which was filmed in Vancouver last spring, set new records for best-ever opening weekend for a 20th Century Fox film, best-ever opening weekend for an R-rated film, best-ever opening for a February release, and best-ever winter opening weekend.
That’s $264.8 million worldwide haul for a movie that was made on a shoestring budget (for comic book movies anyway) of $50 million. Comparatively, Green Lantern, Reynold’s last try at a superhero movie, had a $200 million budget that it barely recovered at the box office.
