Vancouver Giants sniper Ronning will play in Top Prospects Game

Ty Ronning, who is enjoying a breakout season with the Vancouver Giants, will take injured teammate Tyler Benson’s place in Thursday’s BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum.

Ronning, who has 26 goals and 15 assists for 41 points in 45 games, will suit up for Team Cherry, coached by Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Don Cherry, against Team Orr, coached by Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr, in the annual Major Junior showcase game.

The 18-year-old from Burnaby had just two points in 24 games last year during an injury-plagued sophomore season in the Western Hockey League, opened the 2015-16 campaign completely off the NHL’s radar. He has since risen to No. 82 on NHL Central Scouting’s midterm ranking of North American skaters for 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Benson, who was named Team Cherry captain earlier this month, will miss the game due to an undisclosed injury.

Sarnia Sting defenceman Jakob Chychrun, ranked N0. 2 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting, will now wear the ‘C’ for Cherry’s squad.

The Top Prospects Game will include 20 prospects from the Ontario Hockey League, 12 from the Western Hockey League, and eight from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The players competing in the game were chosen by the 30 NHL teams; the rosters were set by NHL Central Scouting.
