A look at DC comics’ artist Jae Lee (with video)

I first came across Jae Lee’s work from DC Comics’s mini series: Before Watchman Ozymandias. In my opinion, the 6-part series drawn by Jae Lee was the most unique among the other solo titles in the mini series. His artistry and unique story-telling style, which includes graceful panels and whimsical brush strokes, bought Ozymandias’ story to life.

As a huge Jae Lee fan, I was super excited to meet and chat with an artist that has influenced my own artistry. I couldn’t help but ask him about his work on Steven King’s graphic novel, The Dark Tower, in which the first 20 issues were penciled by Jae Lee. The work in this series differed slightly from his current style, in that the shadows were heavier, but his signature dramatic whimsical style still resonates through careful composition.

I would never guess that I would have the opportunity to meet Jae Lee so soon, after only 2 years of closely following his work. Although an interview was not possible because Jae Lee was occupied with numerous commissions during the Fan Expo Canada convention in Toronto, I got something better: a commissioned portrait of me by Jae Lee! He said that he felt that I was easy to draw because “I look like an anime character.” My twin sister, who accompanied me to FanExpo, was certain that he was secretly glad that it was not another Batman request. Hulk and Wolverine artwork by Jae Lee

Jae Lee was super generous and patient with me, he signed all of my Jae Lee merchandise:  7 comic books, 4 newly-released DC Comics Jae Lee figurines, one mini art book, and a Superman poster (the poster was his gift to me) during the last few minutes of Fan Expo, just before getting into a limousine for the airport.
