Schools may be closed in Richmond, as declining and shifting enrolment hits that city.
The Richmond School District says many of their schools are underutilized, and that trustees need to make a decision on which schools to close “to ensure facilities are used in an effective and fiscally responsible way.”
The district hasn’t announced a certain number of schools that must close, but as the Richmond News reports here, a district report says “there appears to be residual capacity equal to almost five average sized elementary and two average sized secondary schools.”
In Vancouver, last spring, a report commissioned by the provincial government called for the closure of as many as 19 schools. Like Vancouver, Richmond has fewer school children in the outer lying areas and a growing population in its downtown core, where there are few schools. Also, like Vancouver, many of the low-population schools need to be upgraded for earthquake safety.
Richmond will hold five information sessions over the next month to discuss the issue. All are from 7-9 p.m.
