Disney gifted the Star Wars nerds with a bit of candy on Thursday by releasing a mini-trailer for Episode 7: The Force Awakens on Instagram.
It’s only 15 seconds long but it contains some never-before-seen footage, including Finn (John Boyega) wielding a lightsaber in the woods, presumably in a duel against Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

In the first trailer we saw Boyega (disguised?) as a Stormtrooper and now he’s waving a blue lightsaber around. There are some serious Luke Skywalker parallels going on there. Does this mean that he’s a Jedi? Not necessarily.
Non-Jedi characters have wielded lightsabers before. The cyborg General Grievous could twirl four of them at a time, and, of course, Han Solo didn’t need the force when he used Luke’s weapon to slice open a Tauntaun on Hoth.

A hero that dresses like a Stormtrooper and wields a blue lightsaber? We’ve seen that somewhere before.
The new trailer, which shows off Instagram’s new landscape format, opens with a dark figure addressing a legion of Stormtroopers and officers. Is that Supreme Leader Snoke?
Director J.J. Abrams told Empire magazine that Kylo Ren is not a Sith lord like Darth Vader, but is part of something called the Knights of Ren. His master is Snoke (a motion-captured CGI character played by Andy Serkis) who is a “powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”

And there is a reason why that ominous gathering at the start of the video resembles a Nazi rally.
“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’” Abrams reveals. “What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”
Some of the post-production effects for The Force Awakens are being completed in Vancouver at Industrial Light and Magic’s Gastown studio.
Star Wars VII opens Dec. 18.
