TransLink’s new Compass Card fare structure will create transit inequity on North Shore

Metro Vancouver commuters will have some interesting decisions to make come fall when TransLink introduces a 1-zone fare on all of its bus routes as part of the Compass Card rollout.

Starting Oct. 5 until further notice, riders will be charged the current 1-zone fare of $2.75 on buses and HandyDart regardless of how many zones they travel.

While TransLink is eliminating the three-zone pay structure on its buses, they won’t be doing the same on SkyTrain or Seabus, where the regular fare will remain $4 for 2 zones and $5.50 for 3 zones.

That means North Vancouver residents who work in downtown Vancouver (or vice versa) and commute via Seabus will pay $1.25 more per ride than commuters who take the #240 bus downtown.

Over 241 work days, travelling back and forth, that adds up to a yearly difference of $603 dollars based on single fare prices. If you buy monthly passes ($91 for 1 zone or $124 for 2 zone) the difference is $396. Still significant.
