What would Jesus do?

According to Vancouver South MP Wai Young, he would probably be tough on crime and support Bill C-51, the federal Conservatives’ controversial anti-terrorism act.

As first reported on pressprogress.ca, Young told a congregation at Vancouver’s Harvest City Church that the Conservative government is acting in a similar vein to Jesus Christ.

“Jesus served and acted to always do the right thing not the most popular thing,” said Young. “I want to let you know that our government will stand firm. We will always act and do the right thing. We’ve done that recently by protecting Canadians, I mentioned the victims’ bill of rights. We strengthened the consequences for crime and dangerous offenders at every turn possible. We’ve enacted Bill C-51 which the media says is overreaching and everything else, but really Bill 51 is to update the laws in this country … if Bill C-51 had been in place 30 years ago, (the Air India bombing) would never have happened.”

Young’s statements, which were made on June 29, inspired more than a few Twitter comedians — along with opposition MPs and journalists — to go a step further with Jesus/Conservative Party comparisons.
