First rounders Brock Boeser, Jake Virtanen and Jared McCann highlight the roster of prospects expected to attend the Vancouver Canucks’ development camp, July 6-8, at Shawnigan Lake School.
The Vancouver Island private school, better known for its elite rugby program, will host on-ice sessions at its new arena, which opened earlier this year.

This will be the first visit to B.C. for Boeser, the 23rd player chosen in last Friday’s NHL Entry Draft. The 6-1, 190-pound winger, who scored 35 goals and 33 assists in 57 games with the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks, will attend the University of North Dakota in the fall.
Virtanen and McCann, the No. 6 and No. 24 picks (respectively) in the 2014 draft, both attended camp last year. However, Virtanen didn’t see any on-ice action due a shoulder injury.
Both are coming off successful junior seasons.
After a slow start following his rehab, Virtanen managed 21 goals and 31 assists in 50 games with the Calgary Hitmen. McCann, meanwhile, had an offensive awakening in his third season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, recording 81 points, including 34 goals, in 56 games.
Other players notable invites include 20-year-old centre Cole Cassels, a third-round draft pick in 2013 who led the Oshawa Generals to the Memorial Cup last month, and 19-year-old goaltender Thatcher Demko, a second-round pick in 2014 who stars for Boston College.
Demko, however, won’t be stopping any pucks in Shawnigan. He is recovering from off-season hip surgery.
