Cocaine smuggler gets eight-year jail term from Cranbrook judge

A Calgary trucker caught smuggling nine kilograms of cocaine into B.C. from the U.S. has been handed an eight-year jail term.

Douglas Ernesto Pocasangre, 48, was convicted in B.C. Supreme Court of possession for the purpose of trafficking and importing cocaine into Canada.

Justice Thomas Melnick sentenced him in a Cranbrook courtroom last month. The ruling was released publicly Wednesday.

Melnick called cocaine a “widely-used and pernicious drug in Canadian society.”
